Piec [Furnace]

The Furnace is an imposing rock characterised by a high degree of natural radioactivity. A viewpoint on its summit, reached via steps carved into the rock and provided with a protective railing, looks over the Janówka Valley.

Until 1945 the Furnace was classed as a Monument of Nature. Its name most probably derives from the stone hood hanging on its steam-facing side, where the formation stretches some 20 metres in height. According to accounts and literature, during the Thirty Years’ War the Furnace was used as a refuge for local peasants and their inventory.

The rock lies close to other rock formations, such as the Skalny Most [Rock Bridge] and Malinowa [Raspberry] in the Janówka Valley.
